A 2016 Japan Tourism Agency notice gave bathing facilities examples of ways to accommodate foreign visitors with tattoos, such as cover stickers, set time slots or a private bath, and left the decision to each facility. Policies can change, so check the official site before you go.

How it works

Pick an area and choose whether to see only tattoo-friendly and conditional places or every facility we list. Each card shows our short English summary, the facility's own Japanese wording, a link to the page where we found the policy, and the date we checked it.

"Conditional" usually means the tattoo must be fully covered with a sticker, often sold at the front desk, or that only small tattoos are accepted. Large tattoos usually cannot be covered this way. Many super sento also ban fake tattoos and tattoo stickers themselves, so read the wording carefully.

Facility names are shown in Japanese, as written on their websites. Prices are the listed adult price in yen. For general advice, see our guide to tattoos in Japanese baths.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to an onsen in Osaka with tattoos?

Some places accept tattoos. Among the facilities we list, two Osaka public baths state that tattoos are fine, and Solaniwa Onsen in Bentencho allows entry if the tattoo is fully covered with stickers sold on site. Most super sento in Osaka do not allow tattoos.

Do tattoo cover stickers work?

Only where the facility allows them. Some facilities accept small tattoos that are completely covered (one lists a maximum of 11 × 20 cm), while others ban stickers too. Check the wording on each card.

Are private baths (kashikiri) an option?

Private family baths are often the easiest choice with tattoos, but availability and rules differ. Ask the facility directly before booking.
